Hacienda Chic: 3 Design Tips for a Sophisticated Spanish-Style Interior

Indulge in the allure of Spanish hacienda style interiors, where timeless elegance meets rustic charm. Influenced by the rich heritage of Spain and Mexico, this design aesthetic captures the essence of warm Mediterranean landscapes and brings them into your home. Last  year, Life by Design Interiors was contracted to design the interior of a modern Spanish hacienda style home.  While it was the first true Spanish hacienda style project we have designed, we jumped right in to bring our client’s vision to life.

Here are three tips that helped to guide our team in creating a captivating Spanish hacienda style interior that blended traditional elements with modern twists.

1. Harmonize with Earthy Colors & Authentic Materials:

The foundation of a Spanish hacienda style interior lies in its earthy color palette and use of authentic materials. Begin by selecting warm, earth-toned hues such as terracotta, mustard yellows, or sandy beige for your walls. These colors reflect the sun-soaked landscapes of Spain and create a cozy ambiance.  For a more neutral and modern approach use creamy warm white or sandy beige tones for your walls or cabinets.

To infuse the space with authenticity, we incorporated natural and rustic materials throughout. Architect, Ariel Chavela, of Alamo Architects designed exposed wooden beams and ceilings, stone walls, and limestone floor tile that serve as distinctive architectural elements.

Life by Design Interiors paired these materials with oil rubbed bronze metals in the fixtures and lighting we selected to add a touch of elegance. As well as implementing custom hand made tiles as part of the kitchen backsplash to create an elevated yet cohesive Spanish hacienda ambiance.

2. Blend Old and New:

While Spanish hacienda style interiors embrace tradition, it is essential to strike a balance between old-world charm and contemporary sophistication.  In our recent project, located in the Terrell Hills,  community just 5 miles Northeast of downtown San Antonio, our team did just that.

We incorporated dark bronze finishes throughout in modern fixtures and accent lighting.  We specified beautiful alabaster wall sconces throughout the home which brough a warm glow to the rooms they were placed.  The alabaster material paired well with the more traditional elements throughout the home but the clean crisp lines and minimalism of the fixture kept in line with the modern twist that we incorporated throughout the design. elements This can be done with materials such as custom handmade wall tile.  Pair them with clean-lined, contemporary materials like warm quartz counters with copper veining, a simple shaker style cabinet and lighting to create a striking contrast and bring a touch of modernity to the overall design.

3. Create Intimate Spaces and Embrace Textural Accents:

Spanish hacienda style interiors are known for their cozy and inviting atmosphere. To achieve this, focus on creating intimate spaces that foster relaxation and comfort.

Start by incorporating plush seating arrangements with upholstered sofas, armchairs, and ottomans. Layer textiles such as handwoven rugs, and richly textured curtains to add warmth and visual interest. These soft and inviting elements create a sense of coziness and relaxation.

Pay attention to lighting to enhance the ambiance further. Utilize warm, soft lighting through the use of wall sconces, table lamps, and candles. Consider installing wrought iron chandeliers or pendant lights to add a touch of grandeur and create a romantic atmosphere.

To add depth and character to your space, embrace textural accents. Introduce elements like woven baskets, handcrafted pottery, and decorative tilework. These details bring a tactile quality to your interior, emphasizing the Spanish hacienda style's commitment to craftsmanship and authenticity.

Designing a Spanish hacienda style interior requires a delicate balance of earthy colors, authentic materials, and a refined blend of old and new. By harmonizing these elements, cultivating intimate spaces, and embracing textural accents, you can create a captivating interior that embodies the timeless elegance of the Mediterranean. Let your space transport you to the sun-drenched landscapes of Spain, where old-world charm and contemporary sophistication intertwine seamlessly. Embrace the richness of Spanish culture and relish in the beauty of your Spanish hacienda-style sanctuary.
